The Secret Life of Shoes

Welcome to my series called The Secret Life of Shoes. When I was in Milan, I was sitting at a table with my friends at a concept store called 10 Corso Como. I had my camera with me and had been taking pictures of things that inspired me throughout the day. I was looking under the table at my friends shoes and thought to myself that shoes have a whole life of their own and tell a story of the person that wears them. I feel that shoes are something we don’t pay much attention to because usually it is an afterthought to an outfit. Shoes are often forgotten or seen as less important. I became fascinated with looking at people’s shoes and observing the way people walk and carry themselves. I felt that through analyzing people’s shoes I could in a way understand the type of person they were, or just come up with my own story for them.  On my trip, I began to take pictures of mostly just shoes. It was more comfortable to photograph strangers when I didn’t have to look at them in the eye and make us both uncomfortable.

One day in Milan I stood under the dome at the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. People were raising their hands to the dome as if they were raising their hands up to god, but they were taking photos.

I waited outside of Prada while my friends were shopping and took photos of people’s shoes for around an hour. I started to become more confident with my photo taking and asked people permission to photograph their shoes. A lot of people thought that I was a street style photographer, but I was just having some fun.

So here is a series of shoes. I hope that they inspire you to look at the details of daily life that we often overlook, or consider to be insignificant because simple things like shoes as well as other things deserve to be recognized.

The shoes of a woman in Brera. Her and her dog were equally as surprised and happy when I asked to take their picture. Something that made me really happy about capturing these moments were that it made people feel special and important, the way that I want to make their shoes significant.

Some shoes are abandoned by their owner’s. Honestly, this photo just makes me sad. Who would leave their shoes somewhere like that?
